Along the south-eastern coast of South Africa runs The Garden Route. Lagoons and lakes are interspersed between the thick vegetation which has a huge variety of plants and which lines the route from Mossel Bay to Algoa Bay, the home of one of the largest cities in South Africa - Port Elizabeth. Forty kilometres of incredible Indian Ocean coastline, warm ocean waters and protected beaches make PE, as it's more commonly called, a haven for tourists. In fact, it's been rated as being the fourth best coastal city in the world as far as its weather is concerned. According to the Guinness Book of records the Garden Route has the second mildest climate in the world. It's an oceanic climate - warm summers and mild to cool winters with rain all year. It is one of the most wild, beautiful and historically significant locations in the world.

Thanks to this fabulous climate five of South Africa's seven terrestrial biogeographic areas can be found here. The area is rich in ‘the great outdoors' and boasts the Kragga Kamma Game Park, the world famous Addo Elephant Park, the Maitland Nature Reserve, Baviaanskloof Wilderness Area, the Cape Recife Nature Reserve, the Island nature Reserve, the Van Stadens Wild Flower Nature Reserve, the St Croix Island Marine Reserve and Penguin Colony as well as the Settlers Park Nature Reserve.

Port Elizabeth is one of the best places along the South African coast to watch whales. You can see Bryde's whales all year, Humpbacks between June and August and November and January, and Southern Right Whales between July and November. The animals aren't the only ones to enjoy this oceanic climate. Port Elizabeth is one of the best places in the country to enjoy scuba diving on fish and coral thick beautiful reefs and wrecks, game fishing, surfing, Windsurfing, kiteboarding and sunset cruises. In fact, because it's one of the best sailing venues in the world, the city is known as the watersports capital of South Africa.

It's also the home of Ironman Africa and the oldest cricket ground in the nation - St George's Park. The first Test match played outside of England and Australia was played here in 1889. It saw the first Cricket Test match played outside of Australia or England. England beat South Africa. Port Elizabeth is the home city of one of South Africa's most famous cricketing families - Graham, Peter and Shaun Pollock as well as the cricket team The Warriors. St George's, Nelson Mandela Sports Stadium and Humewood golf course are three of the wonderful sporting venues in the city. The city, harbour and waterfront were upgraded for the 2010 FIFA World Cup and The Bay Stars F.C. has PE as its home base as well.

The city of Port Elizabeth stretches for 16kms along the Bay. Locals call it the Windy City or the Friendly City. One of South Africa's major seaports, it has the biggest ore loading facilities in the southern hemisphere and expanded port facilities is being built at the new Industrial Development Zone at Coega. This location is perfect as a port for both internal and export markets, as it's exactly the same distance from America and major Pacific Rim destinations. However, there are major environmental issues that development to this area will cause that are of grave concern.

It's a city full of history. You can catch just a glimpse of it right in the CBD if you follow the Donkin Heritage Trail. Port Elizabeth started just like Cape Town, as a watering spot for ships on their way to India. Algoa Bay actually means, "to Goa". During the Second Boer War the port was a vital transfer station for soldiers, material and tens of thousands of horses and mules going to the frontlines. So many horses went through here and never returned alive that a memorial was raised in their honour.

If you're planning to live in Port Elizabeth (PE) and you have a family, you'll be pleased to know that there are a number of top schools there, both Government and private, including the most well-known Grey High School and Victoria Park High School. The Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University (NMMU) is the largest in the eastern and Southern Cape with seven facilities spread over five campuses.
Many of the world's largest motor vehicles companies have major assembly plants in PE. Companies like General Motors, Volkswagen and Ford. If Port Elizabeth (PE) isn't assembling the cars they are providing parts for the vehicle industry. Not surprisingly it also has the best motor museum in South Africa.

Transport
Getting around PE is relatively easy. It's not called the 10 Minute City for nothing. The Algoa Bus Company runs the public bus service and has its main bus station in Market Square. The city is in the process of building a bus rapid transit system. In terms of trains, Metrorail runs a local commuter service and the long-distance passenger service, Shosholoza Meyl, links PE with Johannesburg via Bloemfontein.

Two historically attractive modes of transportation unfortunately no longer exist. The city trams and the Apple Express narrow-gauge tourist train to Avontuur. The Apple Express travelled between the city and Thornhill Village and went over the Van Stadens River bridge, the highest two foot narrow-gauge rail bridge in the world. But there are plans to get this back up and running.
Port Elizabeth Airport is the fourth busiest in the country.
