Johannesburg, Jo'burg, Jozi, Joey's, eGoli, it doesn't matter what you call it, it's without doubt the fastest paced city in South Africa. The capital of the Gauteng province, Johannesburg is the largest city in the country, is home to Africa's tallest skyscraper and it's almost completely hidden in the world's largest man-made forest. It's the ‘most' of nearly everything; most densely populated, richest – it's the economic powerhouse of the nation and one of the world's leading financial centres and it has the largest and busiest airport in Africa – the O.R. Tambo. It's the largest city in the world not situated on a river, a lake or a coastline. It exists purely as a result of the gold that can be found beneath it and which was discovered in 1884. And although it isn't one of the nation's three capitals it is the seat of the Constitutional Court. Sandton, a shopping and business centre in one of Johannesburg's suburbs, is known as the richest square mile in Africa.
Among the plethora of tertiary educational facilities within its sprawling city limits, it's home to the University of Johannesburg (UJ), the Witwatersrand University (Wits), the Monash University and the Gordon Institute of Business Science. The Cradle of Humankind is not too far from the city and neither is world famous Soweto.
Here's a list of good suburbs to live in that are fairly central, close to the City centre and Wits university but are leafy, fairly safe, established suburbs with good schools and first class shopping malls listed as per their proximity to the malls.
Eastgate Shopping Mall: Observatory, Killarney, Bedfordview.
Killarney Mall: Between Rosebank and Eastgate. Killarney, Illovo and Houghton.
Rosebank Mall: The Parks as they are collectively called. The Parks include Parktown, Parkview, Craighall Park, Parkwood, Westcliff, Parktown North, Parkhurst and Forest Town. Parktown is one of Johannesburg's largest suburbs and borders on Hillbrow. Hillbrow used to be one of the trendiest places to live in Johannesburg. It isn't any more, in any way whatsoever. These suburbs are close to the Zoo, Zoo Lake and Emmerentia Dam which is what locals call the Johannesburg Botanical Gardens.
Moving a little further out there is Hyde Park: Dunkeld, Inanda, Sandhurst.
Cresta: Blairgowrie, Emmerentia, Linden, Victory Park.

In 2005 Johannesburg began an urban rejuvenation plan. The government-funded inner city redevelopment takes abandoned office buildings and light industrial spaces and turns them into the trendiest places in Jo-Burg. Maboneng Precinct is one such example. Once composed mostly of derelict places this section of the inner city is now filled with artists' studios, galleries and work spaces, loft style apartments, and chi-chi cafes and restaurants where craft beer and artisan pizza are devoured by patrons. The prices reflect the new gentrification. A gourmet coffee can cost R20 or more. Other locations currently under-going this razzle dazzle are Braamfontein and Newtown. Newtown is part of the city's cultural and creative hub with theatres, art galleries, museums, restaurants, book stores, craft markets, clubs and cafés. Deep in its heart is the ‘Theatre of the Struggle' otherwise known as The Market Theatre. Museums include Museum Africa, Sci-Bono Discovery Centre and SAB World of Beers.
Public transport includes the ultramodern Gautrain.
