Potchefstroom, or Potch as it's affectionately known is a mix of vibrant student life and farming community. That, and the fact that it has South Africa's largest chalk factory and one of the largest organ factories as well as an abundant hospitality environment makes the city rather unique. It's a slower pace than Johannesburg but still has that buzz the student population brings. Apart from thirty schools it's home to five tertiary education centres, including the North-West University (NWU). The Agricultural Centre is the largest single agricultural service point in one location in southern Africa. The headquarters of the Highveld Region of the Department Agriculture, the Grain Crops Institute as well as the Agricultural College with its modern training facilities are located here. Potch is full of amusing little bits of information, like the fact that the Agricultural Centre bred an internationally recognised breed of chicken, called the Potchefstroom Koekoek. The city is home to the CTI Education Group, specialising in Information Technology, Commerce, Creative Arts & Graphic Design, Psychology & Counselling, and Law. The Potchefstroom Akademie, offers tertiary education in Somatology, Health and Skincare Therapy, Holistic Health Therapies, Interior Design and Decorating. The Hair Academy of South Africa (THASA) provides national as well as international hairdressing qualifications. There is also the Potchefstroom College of Education.

Potchefstroom is a pretty town that boasts the largest oak tree avenue in the southern hemisphere. It sits on the banks of the Mooirivier, 120kms west-southwest of Johannesburg. The mostly indigenous North-West University Botanical Garden covers nearly 3 hectares. It's not just filled with plants like most botanical gardens but it's also home to a huge variety of mammals, birds, amphibians and fish. Two Hundred different bird species live in the OPM Prozesky bird sanctuary and the Buffelsvlei Wild Animal Park is a must-see. So too is the Boskop Dam Nature Reserve and the Dome Bergland Nature Park. It lies on an 80 km wide, 2 000 million years meteorite crash site. Apart from the impact site itself, hiking, mountain climbing, river rafting, canoeing, mountain biking, and abseiling, sightseeing and fly-fishing are just some of the attractions. Don't forget, there's also the Barbespan Bird Sanctuary, the Pilanesberg National Park, the Faan Meintjies Nature Reserve which is a favourite for birding enthusiasts. The small Wolwespruit Nature Reserve is an almost unknown gem and is great for hiking.

Unsurprisingly, Potch is a sporting town. In fact, it's known as the North-West Province's "Home of Sport". Seventeen of the most important sports have their provincial headquarters here. In 1912 a resident of Potchefstroom, Ken McArthur won a gold medal at the Stockholm Olympics marathon. McArthur was famous in his former North Antrim home village for his training routine which consisted of racing the narrow gauge railway train. The local athletics stadium Kenneth McArthur Stadium is named after him. Potchefstroom has produced numerous other famous sports people as well, like Godfrey Khotso Mokoena - silver medal winner in long jump at the 2008 Beijing Olympics, Ezekiel Sepeng, Jorrie Muller, Justine Robbeson and Ryan Diedericks.
During the FIFA 2010 World Cup the Spanish team "La Roja" chose Potchefstroom as their base camp. It made a major impact on the city. A new sporting complex was built at the University and the local airport runway was extended so large passenger planes could land.

But if you're not into the outdoors or sport then the city's historical legacy may be more your style. It was the first town north of the Vaal River and in 1848, Potchefstroom became the capital of the South African Republic. That only lasted twelve years. In 1860, Potch became the so-called chief city when Pretoria was made the capital city. Its historical legacy can be seen at the Potchefstroom Museum and in the numerous national monuments. The old police station building, Heimat building, the magistrate's office, the old gunpowder house and various churches are all worth visiting. The Edwardian City Hall is the oldest existing city hall north of the Vaal River. South Africa's oldest Reformed Churches and its oldest stone-built church, the Hervormde Church are found here.
Once a month the City Council gardens hosts an art market and exceptional theatre is regularly put on at the Potchefstroom's Sanlam Auditorium. In late September of every year Potch enjoys the mostly) Afrikaans, Aardklop Arts Festival.

But it's not all students, culture, sports and adventuring, Potchefstroom is a growing and important industrial, service and agricultural centre of the North West Province. Steel, food, chemical processing as well as the chicken industry are some of the industries found here. Chubby Chick, Serfontein Poultry, Haagner's Poultry, Crown Chicken and Highveld Egg Cooperation are some of the major players among the chicken producers and they are all in Potchefstroom.

There is no public transport in the city.
