The Shady City
Famous for the abundance of century old oak trees, and once known as the City of Oaks, Stellenbosch lies at the foot of the Cape Fold mountain approximately 50 kilometres (31 miles) east of Cape Town, the banks of the Eerste River. Cradled in the stunningly beautiful Great Drakenstein and Stellenbosch Mountains, it is the second oldest European settlement in the province. Surrounded by vineyards Stellenbosch has the oldest and most famous wine route in the country. It also has the most modern experimental wineries in the world. Stellenbosch University has the only viticultural and oenological department in the country. South Africa's oldest music school, the famous Stellenbosch Conservatoire, is based here along with a number of galleries and museums with national and international art collections on display.

A Snapshot of Both History and the Future
No. 18 Ryneveld Street is the entrance to the delightful Village Museum. The museum is made up of a number of original fully restored houses, mostly from the 19th century. They've been furnished in the characteristic styles of several historical eras. One of the longest rows of old buildings surviving in any major town in southern Africa stands along Dorp Street. The Schreuderhuis is the oldest restored townhouse in South Africa.

The town is home to Stellenbosch University. The Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering is the only southern hemisphere university department that successfully built a communications satellite, Sunsat that was launched in 2000 to orbit the earth for three years. Other tertiary education facilities include the Private Hotel School. Technopark, a modern science park also calls Stellenbosch home.

The Wijnland Auto Museum contains one of the most amazing collections of vintage cars ever collected, from rust buckets to beautifully restored wonders of automotive engineering from a by-gone age.

A Love for the Outdoors
Rugby is without question the most popular sport in Stellenbosch. Maties Rugby Club is one of the oldest and biggest clubs in the world. Stellenbosch University's Maties sports clubs some of the best in South Africa. The town also has some of the best sports schools in the country. Golf is very popular among the residents as well.

But it's not just sport that gets people outside. The Burgerhius Museum in the town and the Stellenbosch Botanical Gardens, Jonkershoek Nature Reserve, Assegaaibosch Nature Reserve, Hottentots Holland Nature Reserve and Helshoogte Pass - one of the most loved and travelled roads in the Western Cape, are all within easy reach of the city. If you're looking for great wine and great food then the 300 year old farm in the Franschhoek Valley, Boschendal is well worth a visit. Hiking through the Beautiful Simonsburg mountains will work out any kinks and clear the mind.
