Durban, home of the ubiquitous bunny chow, and with its humid subtropical climate and extensive beaches is one of South Africa's major tourist destinations. The fact that it's also one of the country's top surfing destination, has one of the world's top dive sites out on the Aliwal Shoal, is host to the world's oldest and largest ultra-marathon - the Comrades Marathon, and has the world's fifth and Africa's largest aquarium - Ushaka, probably helps.

Because of its location, sharks feature predominantly in the city's psyche. There's the previously mentioned Ushaka Aquarium, The Natal Sharks rugby team who play in the Shark Tank, never mind that it's really the King's Park Stadium. As you can imagine, sport plays a large role in the life of the city. The Dolphins, the provincial cricket team calls Durban home as does the A1GP motor race, the thoroughbred horse race, the July Handicap held at Greyville Racecourse, the Gold Cup at Clairwood, not to mention the fact that the city was one of the host cities of the 2010 FIFA World Cup.

Durban is the second most important manufacturing hub after Johannesburg in South Africa, which is not surprising when you realise that it is the biggest city on the Indian Ocean coastline of Africa, and the busiest container port in Africa. The largest shopping mall in the southern hemisphere, Gateway Theatre of Shopping can be found here and Durban is the gateway to the hinterland's national parks, the Drakensberg Mountains and the Zulu Kingdom's historic sites. Speaking of historic, the name ‘Durban' means Christmas in Portuguese. It was named by the explorer Vasco da Gama, rather unimaginatively as he was making his way up the coast at Christmas time in 1497. It's also known as South Africa's Miami Beach. Mahatma Ghandi practised as a lawyer here and in Johannesburg for ten years before returning to India.

Along this coast occurs one of the world's most amazing ocean phenomenons - the Sardine Run, the greatest shoal on earth. Millions of sardines stretch for miles as they make their way north from the southern tip of Africa and they are preyed upon by ocean and aerial predators.

The city has a number of tertiary educational facilities. There are three universities; the University of KwaZulu-Natal, the Durban University of Technology, the Mangosuthu University of Technology. There is also Damelin College, Varsity College and the Regent Business School and the Addington Teaching Hospital.

Where to Live
Musgrave Centre: Morningside, Essenwood, Durban University of Technology (DUT) is in Berea.
The Atrium Shopping Centre: Upper Berea is a good central suburb. This is an up and coming Muslim area.
Gateway Shopping Centre: Umhlanga, Durban North, Ballito. Because Ballito is only 30 minutes from Umhlanga many offices and business parks have moved there.
The Pavilion: The University of KwaZulu-Natal has a few campuses in the area: Westville, Glenwood - which is a very upmarket area and, on the other end of the scale - Pinetown. There are a number of apartment buildings but it's not quite as nice an area as Westville.
Kloof Village Mall, Link Hills Shopping Centre, Heritage Market, Arbour Crossing, La Lucia Mall: Westville, Hillcrest, Gillits, Kloof, Cowies Hill - these suburbs are all inland where it is cooler as there is less humidity. There are a lot of golf estates in these areas.
Bluff Hillside Mall: Bluff, Montclair, Yellow Wood Park, Queensborough - these are good working class suburbs.
Galaria Arbour Town: Amamzintoti

Because of its major tourism attractions Durban has a bus service designed specifically to accommodate the tens of thousands of visitors. It's called the People Mover and runs every 15 minutes and consists of three routes within the central business district and along the beachfront, connecting city's various attractions.
