Among the many reasons why Pietermaritzburg is an important city is the fact that it played an important part in the lives of two men who, in their turn, have gone on to impact their own countries and the world; Mohandas Ghandi (better known as Mahatma Ghandi) and Nelson Mandela. On 7 June 1893, Ghandi, who had a first-class ticket for the train, was thrown off the train when he refused to move to the van compartment at the back of the train when a white man complained about his presence in the compartment. This incident solidified his determination to fight racial discrimination both in South Africa and in India. Sixty years later Nelson Mandela who had been arrested in nearby Howick was taken to the Old Prison in Pietermaritzburg, remanded for trial in Johannesburg. It was the start of his twenty-seven years' imprisonment. Both men went on to lead their countries to independence and both decried the unnecessary use of violence. It's clearly a city that makes a huge impression on people. Alan Paton, author of Cry the Beloved Country, was born here.

As with every city in South Africa, sport is a big part of the landscape in Pietermaritzburg. Three of the toughest races all run between Pietermaritzburg and Durban; Comrades Marathon - the world's oldest and largest ultramarathon run over a distance of approximately 90 km and has been run since 1921, since 1986 - the 106km Amashova Cycle Classic and the since 1951 - one of the world's toughest and most prestigious canoe races, the Dusi Canoe Marathon. The other sporting event that makes Pietermaritzburg famous is the Midmar Mile - the world's largest open water swim over 1.6kms through the Valley of a Thousand Hills. It attracts over 16 000 swimmers from around the world.

Cricket is part of the life-blood of the city and not only is the Pietermaritzburg Oval considered one of the most picturesque cricket grounds in South Africa, but it's also only one of two cricket grounds in the world that are regularly used for first-class cricket matches that has a tree within the boundary. It has hosted two of the 2003 Cricket World Cup matches.

If there's no world-class sporting event to be a part of, but you still want to enjoy the great outdoors, then there's always SANBI Botanical Gardens, Albert Falls Nature Reserve, Howick Falls, Midmar Public Nature Reserve, Queens Elizabeth Park and World's View. If the weather doesn't permit outdoor pursuits the Natal Museum and the Tatham Art Gallery are well worth a visit.

On the commercial side, Pietermaritzburg is the capital and second-largest city in the KwaZulu-Natal province. It's a regionally important industrial hub, producing aluminium, timber and dairy products.

Pietermaritzburg has a number of excellent private schools; St Johns, Epworth and Wykeham Collegiate and Hilton, as well as really good public schools like Maritzburg College and Girls High. Tertiary educational facilities include the Institute for Commercial Forestry Research, Oval International, Intec College, ICESA City Campus, Boston City Campus & Business College, Maritzburg Technology College, Varsity College, the University of South Africa, the Durban University of Technology Indumiso Campus, Durban University of Technology Riverside Campus, Damelin as well as the Edendale and Greys Hospitals.

Where to Live
Cascades Shopping Centre, Midlands Mall - there is no residential area immediately adjacent to the Midlands Mall but it is the largest mall in Pietermaritzburg: Athlone, Chase Valley, Chase Heights, Clarendon, Montrose, Oak Park and Wembley.
Hayfields Mall: Hayfields - probably the most popular suburb in the city. It was developed on the old Hesketh Racecourse. It has lots of affordable cluster accommodation. Meadows, Bellevue and Epworth.
Scottsville Mall: Scotsville. This is the closest mall to the University UKZN PMB Campus and is very popular with students.
The Quarry: Mount Michael, Hilton. These suburbs are out of town and fall under the Howick municipality, but are geographically closer to Pietermaritzburg.

Transport
There is no formal public transport in Pietermaritzburg but the city is on the N3 national road, the primary route between the Pretoria-Johannesburg-Witwatersrand and Durban. The city is served by Pietermaritzburg (Oribi) Airport, and is on the Johannesburg-Durban route of Shosholoza Meyl.
