The entire KwaZulu-Natal area is roughly the size of Portugal. The northern region is the largest part and is made of two mountainous areas, the Drakensberg Mountains in the west and the Lebombo Mountains in the north and the stunning coastline north of Durban. The ancient mountain ranges are part of a solid basalt wall that rises over 3,000m between Lesotho and Swaziland. The large Tugela River flows across the province through alpine grassland and moist savanna to the subtropical region of lush and well-watered valleys, washed by the warm Indian Ocean. Because of their international importance to migratory species, the area's rich biodiversity and a serious heart for conservation the iSimangaliso Wetland Park and the uKhahlamba Drakensberg Park have been declared UNESCO World Heritage Sites. Some of Africa's most famous game and nature reserves are situated in northern KwaZulu Natal - St Lucia marine Sanctuary, Sodwana Bay national Park, Kosi Bay Nature Reserve, Hluhluwe-Umfolozi Park. Ecology tourism is increasingly important to the economy of KwaZulu-Natal.

There's a continual tension between the conservation efforts and the fact that the area is also a rich location for heavy minerals and coal. A prime example of that is the threat to the marine ecology and the fishing economy of the prawn and nurse fisheries of KwaZulu-Natal's coast, including the Tugela Banks are threatened by the offshore mining of heavy mineral sands and minerals such as rutile, ilmenite and zircon. The town of Newcastle is the province's industrial powerhouse. Mittal Steel South Africa and the Karbochem synthetic rubber plant dominate the economy. Newcastle is also the largest producer of chrome chemicals in Africa and its Cogeneration Plant is Africa's first gas-fired power station.

The University of Zululand - Unizulu - is the only comprehensive tertiary educational institution north of the Tugela River in KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa although the 1000 Hills Chefs School one of the country's top culinary schools and training ground for a number of the world's top chefs is found here.

Where to Live
The biggest towns in this region are Newcastle, which is actually a city it's grown so big, the mining town Dundee, Empangeni, Richard's Bay - most the town works for the Aluminium smelters Hillside Aluminum and Bayside Aluminium which are operated by BHP Billiton. St Lucia & Hluhluwe are holiday destinations famous for their game and fishing. Other towns, which are smaller and far more are Mtubatuba, Ulundi, Vryheid and Paulpietersburg.

There is no formal public transport in the Northern KZN.
