On 14 May, 2014 the city of Nelspruit officially became Mbombela. It's one of the most recent name changes in South Africa. 330kms east of Johannesburg, Mbombela is the official gateway and capital of Mpumalanga and the last city before the Kruger National Park.

The wonderful sub-tropical climate and rich soil makes it the perfect location for the country fruit and nut growing region. Mangoes, papaya, avocadoes, bananas, citrus, sugar cane, pecans and macadamias are all grown there. It's such a fertile area that over 700 tons of macadamias are produced each year. But it's not just a great place to grow stuff. Mbombela is also a key agricultural manufacturing hub for north-eastern South Africa. Major industries include the canning, juicing and extract of the fruit and sugar cane. Sugar is big business here and TSB, the producer of Selati sugar has its headquarters close by. The Agricultural Research Council's Institute for Tropical and Subtropical Crops and the Lowveld Botanical Gardens as well as Citrus Research International (CRI) make their home here.

Another crop, so to speak, that relies on the rich soils and climate is the forests. The local economy of Mbombela relies heavily on the trees. West of the city is a SAPPI paper mill that was recently upgraded to produce cellulose fibres needed for various applications. SAPPI is just one of the timber related companies in the region. There are many sawmills, furniture, crate and carton manufacturing industries as well. Mbombela is the global headquarters of KISHUGU, the parent company of Working on Fire. They have trained 5000 trained veld and forest firefighters.

It's not surprising that most of the educational facilities in, or near Mbombela are mostly agricultural related. The University of Mpumalanga is one of the newest universities in South Africa and incorporates three existing institutions - the Lowveld College of Agriculture which conducts research in the field of botany, the hospitality school at KaNyamazane and the Siyabuswa Education Campus. There is also the Tshwane University of Technology satellite campus that has well over 1 500 students. UNISA has an office in the city and offers distance courses. There are four major public high schools and a number of private schools.

Among the shows the city hosts are the Lowveld Show, the Lowveld Agri Show and the Innibos Arts Festival. The area is famous for its San art.

The city is home to the Manganese Metal Company (MMC) and Delta EMD who together form one of the largest Manganese processing facilities in the world. There is also a thriving construction industry.

Although not as big as other towns, Mbombela played host to a number of games in the 2010 FIFA World Cup. The two airports, the Mbombela Airport and the Kruger Mpumalanga International bring in tourists via private planes and charters as well as other flights for the Kruger National Park, the Emnotweni Casino and the Sudwala Caves. Mbombela is also a favourite shopping destination for people from Mozambique and Swaziland who come to do their monthly grocery shopping at the Riverside and Ilanga malls.

It's a very popular tourist destination for visitors from Mozambique. The Maputo Corridor and the Trans-Kalahari Corridor make Mbombela the centre of a major trading route in southern Africa that connects the Indian and Atlantic Oceans by linking Johannesburg, Maputo and Walvis Bay. The N4 toll route is the main arterial route and has a double lane highway all the way to Johannesburg and Pretoria.

Apart from soccer, Mbombela also has the Alkmaar Raceway. This motocross track hosted the South African Motocross Grand Prix, part of the world championship series, in 2008.

Transport
The downtown bus terminal for Buscor (Pty) Ltd is one of the largest in the southern hemisphere.
