There's a friendly rivalry between Jo'burgers and Capetonians. Both claim to live in the best city in South Africa. It looks like Cape Town, a.k.a. the Mother City, South Africa's legislative capital and seat of the National Parliament has won. In 2013, The Daily Telegraph voted it as the best global city. It's also been voted as the World Design Capital and the best place in the world to visit by none other than the New York Times. As one of the most multicultural cities in the world, it's also the second largest city in South Africa. It's also the most laid back. However, it is the headquarters of a number of the largest companies in South Africa as well.

Back in the Beginning
Although evidence of human habitation dates back nearly 15,000 years, Cape Town really began its climb towards ‘world famous city', as a supply station, thanks to the Company's Garden, for the Dutch East India Company's merchant ships. The first permanent European settlement was formed in 1652 and until gold was found in Johannesburg it was the country's largest city. People came to Cape Town for many reasons. Some fleeing religious persecution, some for trade and exploration opportunities and some as slaves. The cultural diversity is reflected in its architecture. It has the highest density of Cape Dutch style buildings in the world, combining the architectural traditions of the Netherlands, Germany, France and Indonesia.

What the City is Famous For
There are a number of things Cape Town is famous for. The Mountain is the most obvious one. But there are also 70 peaks over 300m (980ft) within the official city limits. That's a lot of mountain. With one of the highest levels of biodiversity of any equivalent area in the world, it's no wonder that these protected areas are a World Heritage Site. Table Mountain alone has an estimated 2,200 species of plants. Most of them found nowhere else in the world. That's more plants than the entire United Kingdom.

The weather comes a close second. The warm summer Mediterranean climate has dry, warm summers and mild, moderately wet winters. But when the winter weather really lets rip it can get spectacularly wet and windy.

There's so much to do in Cape Town you'll never be bored. For cosmopolitan cappuccino's, food and shopping there's the V&A Waterfront. Wine tasting, whale watching, Mostert's Mill, the Cape Malay Bo-Kaap, the Kirstenbosch National Botanical Garden, the Groote Kerk - South Africa's oldest place of worship are a few of the attractions. If you're a museum lover there's the Bo-Kaap Museum, the Castle of Good Hope, the District Six Museum, Koopmans-De Wet House and the Slave Lodge.

Each year Cape Town hosts the Cape Argus Cycle Tour, Cape Epic, J&B Met and Two Oceans Marathon, The Cape Minstrel Carnival, Cape Town International Jazz Festival, Kirstenbosch Summer Concerts, as well as the Decorex, the Design Indaba, the Loeries and Pendoring awards.
The film industry is flourishing and the Cape Town Film Studios rivals anything in Hollywood. Big name international filmmakers have been flocking to Cape Town to make their mega-budget movies.

Where to Live
Thanks to the University of Cape Town, The University of Stellenbosch, the University of the Western Cape and Cape Peninsula University of Technology, Groote Schuur Teaching Hospital and Tygerberg Teaching Hospital, Cape Town has a large student population. The suburbs below have been grouped around the nearest shopping mall to them.

The Southern suburbs are some of the best in Cape Town but can be pricey.
Bayside Mall: Bloubergstrand.
V&A Waterfront: Green Point, Sea Point, Mouille Point are favourite suburbs among interns and foreigners.
Gardens Shopping Centre: Oranjezicht, Tamboerskloof, Gardens, Bantry Bay, Clifton, Camps Bay. This is a very expensive area and is usually a favourite of rich foreigners and out of reach of the average citizen.
Willowbridge Mall: Durbanville, Brackenfell, Bellville.
Tyger Valley Shopping Centre: The Cape Peninsula University of Technology, University of the Western Cape. Stellenbosch University.
Somerset Mall: Heldevue, Strand, Somerset West.
Riverside Mall: Rondebosch, Observatory, Mowbray, Rondebosch, Kenilworth, Wynberg, Plumstead.
Cavendish Square Mall: Claremont, Newlands, University of Cape Town, Kenilworth.
Blue Route Mall: Bergvleit, Kirstenhof, Meadowridge.
Constantia Village: Tokai, Constantia.
The Northern suburbs are more reasonably priced.
Canal Walk Shopping Centre: Tableview, Bloubergstrand, Milnerton. These suburbs have the best view of ‘the mountain' and they strike a good balance between beauty and value for money – as long as you don't mind the wind.
'Behind the Mountain' suburbs are quite a bit cheaper and are good value for money.
Longbeach Mall: Noordhoek, Fish Hoek, Noordhoek, Kommetjie - which is almost not a suburb.

Golden Arrow Buses are pretty much everywhere. The City Sightseeing Bus has two routes from which to see the best of the city. There's also the Metrorail, Park-and-Ride facilities, Dial-a-Ride public transport.

The Transport Information Centre (TIC) is available 24/7. The call centre provides information on Cape Town's public transport - routes, schedules, ticket prices, ticket outlets and locations of interchanges, ranks and park-and-ride facilities, as well as information on long distance bus, rail and taxi operators, the location of tourist information centres, heritage sites and popular attractions in and around Cape Town.
